About Playa de Merón
Merón is a small cove at the mouth of the Merón stream on the Villaviciosa coast of Asturias, about 14 km from the town and part of the 'Jurassic Coast' known for its dinosaur tracks. A fossil trackway lies about half a kilometre away and can be reached along a path at the foot of the cliffs. The beach is about 200 m long and 50 m deep, a mix of gravel and golden sand, with moderate Atlantic swell that suits surfers. There is a grassy area behind the beach for lying out. It is remote and lightly used, and naturists have used it for a long time. FEN records a lifeguard in season, but there are no toilets or showers.
Getting there
Access is by narrow local roads off the AS-256 near Villaviciosa; the last stretch is a narrow concrete track ending at a small free car park with only a few dozen spaces. From there a short walk through eucalyptus woodland brings you to the beach. Sources disagree on how easy the walk is: plan for a short but uneven path. There is no public transport to the beach itself.
