About Playa de Meñakoz Barrika
Meñakoz is a small, wild cove on the cliffs of the Uribe Kosta coast north of Bilbao, on the boundary between Sopela and Barrika in Bizkaia. Its shore is made almost entirely of large rounded boulders and rock slabs rather than sand, and it is roughly 270 m long. The beach is best known for two things: a powerful big-wave surf break off the point that attracts experienced surfers in winter, and a long-standing nudist tradition among sunbathers who come for the quiet and the shelter of the cliffs. Visitor numbers are low because the access is rough and there are no services of any kind: no lifeguard, toilets, showers or bar. The sea is usually rough and exposed to Atlantic swell and wind, so swimming calls for real caution, and sunbathing here means finding a flat patch among the stones. The surrounding cliffs belong to the protected coastal strip between Sopela and Barrika, and a rough coastal path links Meñakoz with neighbouring coves such as Atxabiribil and Barrika.
Getting there
Drive along the BI-2122 coast road between Sopela and Barrika and take the turning down to the small unsurfaced parking area above the cove, which only holds around a dozen cars, so arrive early in summer. From there a steep, uneven path drops to the boulder beach. The Bilbao Metro (line 1) stops at Sopela and Larrabasterra, from where it is a longer walk along the coast. Sturdy footwear is advisable; the route is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
What visitors say
Guides describe Meñakoz as a raw, unspoiled spot that suits people who want solitude more than comfort. The tiny car park and the stony, awkward path down are the most common complaints, along with the lack of sand. Surfers rate the wave highly, while sunbathers note that the cove is calm and uncrowded, with nude and clothed users mixing without friction. Several sources warn about strong swell and wind.
