About Playa de Mata Negra
La Mata Negra is a natural beach of fine golden sand on the Costa de la Luz in Punta Umbría (Huelva), between Los Enebrales and El Portil. It is backed by dunes and the juniper and pine woodland of the Los Enebrales protected area, and has no buildings behind it. Guides give it a length of about 350 m and a width of about 30 m, though it is really a stretch of a much longer, continuous shoreline. The sea is usually moderate. Beach guides describe it as a naturist beach where nude bathing is common and accepted, and it is used by anglers too. It is quiet even in July and August. In high season a lifeguard is on duty, but there is no bar, toilet or shower, and no shade apart from what you bring.
Getting there
From Huelva take the H-414 to Punta Umbría (about 15 km). There is a free car park on compacted earth right beside the beach, about a minute's walk from the sand; in peak season arrive before about 10:00 to find a space. Damas buses run from Huelva to Punta Umbría every 20 to 30 minutes in summer, and a summer passenger boat crosses the Odiel estuary from Huelva. There is no step-free access to the sand.
What visitors say
Visitors describe a quiet, natural beach with fine sand, the woodland behind and plenty of room, used by naturists and anglers. The free parking close to the sand is appreciated, but it fills up on summer weekends. Some guides mention a seasonal beach bar and others say there is none, so visitors are advised to bring their own food and water.
