About Playa de La Garañona
La Garañona is a long, narrow strip of dark sand and boulders at the foot of a cliff more than 200 m high in El Sauzal, on Tenerife's north coast. FEN gives it as about 1.3 km long and only around 10 m wide, with strong surf and very few visitors. For decades its isolation made it a place for nude bathing, and it is still on the Spanish Naturist Federation's list. The cliff above is unstable, though, and the old fishermen's path that once led down to the sand is now described as impassable and exposed to rockfall. Today most people only see the beach from the landscaped Parque-Mirador de La Garañona at the top, which has gardens, palm groves, footpaths and a café. The Atlantic swell here is heavy, and there are no services on the beach.
Getting there
The only safe way to enjoy La Garañona now is from the Parque-Mirador de La Garañona in El Sauzal, reached by car from the TF-5 north motorway. The footpath down the cliff is reported to be impassable and dangerous because of rockfalls, and local press in July 2026 reported that access to the shore is not permitted. Some directories mention access by boat, but the heavy north-coast swell makes landing difficult. Do not attempt the descent.
Legal context
Nudity in public is not illegal in Spain, and La Garañona has a nudist tradition. As of July 2026 local press reports that access to the shore is not permitted because the cliff path is impassable and prone to rockfalls.
Naturism at Playa de La Garañona sits under Spain's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Naturist status confirmed against an official source on 24 October 2026.
