About Playa Illa Roja

Illa Roja is a small cove on the Begur coast in the Baix Empordà, between the beaches of Sa Riera (Begur) and El Racó (Pals). It takes its name from a large reddish rock stack that rises from the water right off the beach. The cove is about 170 m of golden sand framed by cracked cliffs and Mediterranean pines, with clear water and moderate waves. It is one of the best-known nude beaches on the Costa Brava, though nudity is optional in practice and the proportion of nude bathers varies. The Club Català de Naturisme holds gatherings here, for example on Naturism Day in early June, and many French visitors come too. The beach is easily seen from the coastal path above. In summer it gets crowded and the only facility is a small seasonal snack bar.

Getting there

Illa Roja is reached only on foot along the Camí de Ronda coastal path. The quickest way is to park near Platja del Racó (Pals), where there is a regulated paid zone, and walk south for about 10 minutes before taking the stone steps down to the cove. You can also park at Sa Riera in Begur and walk north for about 15 minutes. The path includes steps and uneven ground, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs. Car parks fill early in July and August.

What visitors say

Visitors rate Illa Roja as one of the prettiest coves on the Costa Brava, mainly for the red rock stack and clear water. Many say it gets very crowded in high summer, and some note that on recent visits fewer people were nude than its reputation suggests. Most recommend arriving early, parking at Racó and wearing proper shoes for the coastal path.

Legal context

Spain has no national law against nudity in public, and Catalan practice generally tolerates nude bathing. Illa Roja is nude by long custom and is listed by the Spanish Naturist Federation; we found no specific ordinance.

Naturism at Playa Illa Roja sits under Spain's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
