About Playa de Ballota
Ballota (La Ballota, also called Playa de la Mesa) is a shell-shaped beach near Cue in the municipality of Llanes, on the eastern coast of Asturias. Directly in front of it rises the islet of Castro Ballota, where yellow-legged gulls and European storm petrels nest, and the coastline around it is protected for its vegetation and landscape. The beach is about 350 metres long and 60 metres wide, of medium golden sand; at high tide the sand is almost completely covered. A powerful blowhole (bufón) nearby sprays during heavy swell, and the Boriza viewpoint above gives wide views of the coast. Spain's national tourism site describes a nude section, naturally separated from the rest of the beach by a small rocky barrier that runs into the water. Being close to Cue, it gets medium to busy use in summer, though less than neighbouring Andrín. Lifeguards are on duty in summer; waves can be strong and flags are used.
Getting there
From Cue, a dirt track that is in reasonable condition lets cars get close to the beach, with parking at the end; the last stretch is on foot down to the sand. Llanes is a few kilometres away by road. There is no adapted access. Check the tide, since the beach almost disappears at high water.
What visitors say
Guides praise the setting, especially the islet and the views from the Boriza viewpoint, and confirm nudism is practised in the separated section. Sources differ on sea conditions, from moderate to strong waves, and one rates the beach as hazardous in rough weather. The tide is the main practical concern, as high water covers most of the sand.
