About Playa Cofete
Cofete is the wild Atlantic beach on the north (windward) side of the Jandía peninsula at the southern tip of Fuerteventura, inside Jandía Natural Park in the municipality of Pájara. Roughly 12-14 km of golden sand run beneath the steep ridge of Pico de la Zarza, with the tiny hamlet of Cofete and the mysterious Villa Winter on the hillside behind. There is no development at all: no showers, sunbeds, beach bars or lifeguards. Because the beach is so vast and remote, nude sunbathing is widespread and tolerated anywhere away from the car park and the main access tracks; naturist guides describe it as free naturist use rather than a marked zone. The sea is the real issue: constant wind, heavy surf and strong currents make swimming dangerous, and most guides advise against going in beyond the shallows. Visitors range from day-trippers on 4x4 tours to campers and hikers.
Getting there
From Morro Jable, follow the signed unpaved track over the Jandía mountains; it is about 18-20 km of rough dirt road, taking roughly 40 minutes. Ordinary cars do make it but many rental contracts exclude unpaved roads, so a 4x4 is more comfortable; off-road taxis also run from Jandía. There is informal parking near Cofete hamlet, then a short walk over sand to the beach. Bring all water and food, and allow for strong sun and wind.
