About Playa Caleta del Congrio
Caleta del Congrio is the easternmost of the Papagayo coves on Lanzarote's southern tip, in Yaiza municipality within the protected Los Ajaches area. It is a bay of pale, fine sand about 280 metres long and 20 metres wide, with calm, turquoise water and views across to Fuerteventura. A rocky promontory divides it into two sections. The cove has a long nudist history and is still one of the main nude beaches of the Papagayo area, together with Puerto Muelas and part of Playa Mujeres; today it is mixed, with nude and clothed visitors, but less crowded than the more famous Papagayo coves. The Spanish Naturist Federation nonetheless reports high occupancy in summer. There are no facilities of any kind: no shade, bar, toilets or lifeguards. It is also known as gay-friendly.
Getting there
Drive towards Papagayo from Playa Blanca on the dirt road into the Los Ajaches protected area; there is a small, unguarded car park with limited spaces near the cove. From the car park it is about a 10-minute walk over low hills on a rough path. The cove can also be reached on foot along the coast from Playa Blanca or by boat. Not suitable for wheelchairs.
What visitors say
Visitors describe a quiet, scenic cove with calm water, now mixed between nude and clothed bathers but still a main nude spot at Papagayo. Reports note the lack of any facilities, so bring food, water and shade, and a short hike from limited parking. Some guides call it gay-friendly.
