About Playa Cala de Enmedio
Cala de Enmedio is a small cove in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park (Almería), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, lying between the village of Agua Amarga and Cala del Plomo. It is about 130 metres long and 37 metres deep, with gravel and golden sand that glints with metallic flecks, and is framed by pale rock formations, some of which are fossilised dunes. The water is calm and clear, which makes it a favourite for snorkelling. It can only be reached on foot or by boat, so it stays quiet even in summer, and it is a well-known nude cove. In 2012 the Repsol Guide named it the best spot in Andalusia. There are no facilities whatsoever. Boats anchoring in the bay can disturb the peace in high season.
Getting there
Two walking routes: from Agua Amarga, about 30 minutes via Calle Depósito and over the Cerro del Cuartel along white cliffs; or, recommended by FEN, from Cala del Plomo, a 15-minute walk (reaching Cala del Plomo's car park involves roughly 20 minutes on an unpaved track). The paths are rough and hot in summer: wear good shoes and carry water. Not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
What visitors say
Visitors praise the clear water, snorkelling and scenery and say the walk is worth it, though some find the access tiring because of the rough track and the hike. Boats anchoring in the bay are a recurring complaint in summer. Guides note it is more naturist than the mixed village beach at Agua Amarga.
