About Platja dels Balmins

Platja dels Balmins (Cala Balmins) is a well-known nude cove just east of Sitges town centre on the Garraf coast, about 40 minutes south of Barcelona. It is around 230 to 240 metres long and 20 metres wide, a curve of golden sand below a rocky headland, with calm, clear water. There is no promenade, but a ramp reaches the sand, so it is one of the few nude beaches in the area usable by people with reduced mobility. The Spanish Naturist Federation describes a beach where families, nudists and gay visitors share the space respectfully, and Balmins has a long reputation as one of Europe's best-known gay-friendly nude beaches. In practice usage varies along the beach: reviewers describe the first section as mainly gay male nudists and the far end as more mixed and clothing-optional. A beach bar and restaurant sit in the cove itself, and there are showers, lifeguards in season and masseurs. It is busy in summer, being so close to town.

Getting there

Walk east from Sitges seafront past Sant Sebastià beach and the cemetery headland; the cove is about 10 to 15 minutes from the town. Several paths drop to the sand: reviewers warn the first one is steep and slippery and recommend the second path or the proper path down by the café/restaurant at the far end, which is also where the ramp is. Sitges station has frequent Rodalies trains from Barcelona. Parking in Sitges is paid and scarce in summer.

What visitors say

Reviews are mostly positive about the clear water, scenery and the on-site bar. Many guides and blogs single it out as a top gay nude beach. Opinions differ on atmosphere: some describe a relaxed mixed beach, while at least one woman reported feeling out of place in the mainly male first section. Common tips are to avoid the first, treacherous path down and to arrive early in summer, when the cove gets crowded.
