About Platja del Russo
Platja del Russo (El Ruso) lies in the Serra d'Irta Natural Park south of Peñíscola, about 7 km from the town. With its neighbour Platja del Pebret, it is one of the very few sandy beaches along this protected, largely rocky coastline. It is a small beach, roughly 80 by 30 metres of golden sand with moderate waves, set against scrub-covered hills. Its name comes from a Russian lieutenant who settled here; it was previously called Lance Nuevo. Close by is a smaller cove known as La Playeta, with darker sand enclosed by cliffs and caves. The Spanish Naturist Federation lists El Russo as a nudist-tradition beach with low occupancy; a general beach directory does not mark it as nudist, so expect a mix. A restored former coastguard (carabineros) house nearby is a useful landmark, and the park has picnic areas. There are no lifeguards or showers.
Getting there
From Peñíscola take the road into the Serra d'Irta park past the Torre del Badum; the final stretch is a forest track of about 4.5 km that is in poor condition, so drive slowly. There is an unguarded parking area with fewer than 50 spaces near Pebret and El Russo. No public transport reaches the beach. Walkers and cyclists can follow the park's coastal route.
