About Platja del Mago

Playa del Mago (El Mago) is a small, sheltered cove in the Portals Vells area of Calvià, on the south-western tip of Mallorca about 20 minutes' drive from Palma. It takes its name from the 1967 film The Magus, shot on this coast. The cove is tiny, somewhere between 20 and 80 metres of fine pale sand and gravel depending on the source, framed by pine-covered rock that gives some natural shade and keeps the water calm and clear. It sits beside the larger, clothed Portals Vells III (Playa del Rey), so the nude cove is the smaller of the pair. The Spanish Naturist Federation lists it as a nudist-tradition beach with high occupancy, and travel guides often call it Calvià's nude beach, though some visitors report seeing clothed bathers too, with nudists also using the rocks. There is a beach bar and restaurant, but no lifeguard or showers. Because the space is so limited it fills quickly in summer.

Getting there

Drive from Palma towards Magaluf and then follow the road to Portals Vells; the last stretch passes through the Sol de Mallorca area. Parking near the coves is very limited, so arrive early or park in Sol de Mallorca and walk down. Paths from the parking descend to the sand over uneven ground; not wheelchair accessible. Boat excursions from nearby resorts also call at Portals Vells.

What visitors say

Visitors like the clear, calm water and pine shade but repeatedly say the cove is very small and crowded in summer, so arriving early is the main tip. Parking is a common complaint. Some reviewers found more clothed than nude bathers on the sand and note that naturists also spread onto the rocks beside the cove.
