About Platja de Son Real
Son Real is an undeveloped stretch of coast in Santa Margalida on Mallorca's north-east shore, running between Can Picafort and Son Serra de Marina inside the publicly owned Son Real estate. It is less a single beach than a series of small strands of white sand and gravel broken up by low limestone rock, around 300 metres of usable shoreline in the section the Spanish Naturist Federation lists. The setting is unusual: the Talayotic burial ground known as the Necròpolis de Son Real sits right on the shore, with information boards, and the rocky islet of Illot dels Porros lies just offshore. Nude bathers mostly gather on the strands facing that islet. Because the only way in is on foot or by bike, the beach stays quiet even in July and August, and nudists and clothed walkers share it without friction. There is no lifeguard, no shower and no shade beyond your own; the shore is rocky underfoot and the sea can be choppy with some undertow.
Getting there
Most visitors leave the car at the Finca Pública de Son Real car park beside the Ma-12 between Can Picafort and Artà and follow the estate tracks to the coast, a walk of roughly 45 minutes to an hour on easy but sandy ground; cycling is also possible. Alternatively, walk the coastal path east from Can Picafort (about 6 km to Son Serra de Marina, around 1.5 hours one way). There are no facilities on the way, so carry water. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
What visitors say
Visitors describe Son Real as one of the emptiest bits of Mallorca's coast in high season, which is why naturists favour it. The archaeological site is a common bonus on the walk in. Recurring tips: wear water shoes because of the rocky shoreline, bring all food, water and sun protection because there is nothing on site, and take care with currents. Opinions differ on the walk from the car park, which some find pleasant and others find long in summer heat.
