About Platja de Pals

Platja de Pals is a wide, 3.5 km sweep of golden sand and dunes on the Costa Brava in Girona, several kilometres from the village of Pals, facing the Medes Islands across a natural bay. It lies within the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter natural park, and is usually split into two named sections: Platja del Grau and Platja Gran. Nude bathing is concentrated on Platja Gran, in front of the site of the former Radio Liberty station, whose Cold War antennas stood here until some years ago; the station is the reason this shore escaped development. Pals' own tourism office says that area has traditionally been a nudist beach, and the Spanish Naturist Federation lists it. Water quality is rated highly by the Catalan Water Agency. The beach shelves steeply into the water and is exposed to waves, so take care swimming. A fragile dune area behind the beach is fenced off to protect it.

Getting there

Follow the road from Pals towards the coast. Platja Gran has an unguarded car park (the closest spaces are paid in season) and boardwalks over the dunes, with access for people with reduced mobility and an amphibious beach chair. Head to the area in front of the old Radio Liberty site for the nude section. Campsites, hotels and apartments nearby make it easy to stay close.

What visitors say

Guides describe Platja Gran as one of the best natural beaches on the Costa Brava, with space to spread out even in summer and a long-standing nude section in front of the old radio station site. Common tips: the water deepens quickly and waves can be strong, the nearest parking is paid, and walking a little away from the main access points gives more privacy.
