About Platja de l'Home Mort

L'Home Mort is an isolated stretch of coast at the southern end of the Sitges municipality, on the Garraf coast south-west of Barcelona, well away from the town's built-up seafront. It is really two small coves divided by a rocky point: the Platja de l'Home Mort itself and the neighbouring Platja de Roses. Together they measure a little under 300 metres, and the Spanish Naturist Federation (FEN) describes the whole area as a naturist beach rather than a mixed beach with a nude corner. The shore is a mix of rounded pebbles and golden sand, the water is shallow and normally calm, and the seabed alternates between rock and sand, which makes it good for a swim along the edge. There is almost no natural shade. A small beach bar with a terrace operates in season, and a limited number of sunbeds and parasols are hired out. The railway line between Barcelona and Tarragona runs along the cliff directly behind the beach, so passing trains are part of the experience. Since at least the 1930s the cove has been associated with the gay community, and today it is widely known as one of the main gay nude beaches in Catalonia, while also being used by mixed naturists. It gets busy on summer weekends despite the awkward access.

Getting there

There is no road to the beach. Most people walk from the eastern edge of Sitges: start near the former Atlàntida club area and follow the coastal footpath south-west for roughly 45 minutes, partly on rough cliff paths and passing close to the railway line. Alternatively, approach from the Can Girona or Casa del Mar housing estates, or cycle along the rideable track. Driving gets you only as far as the mouth of the stream (riera), with informal parking there and a walk beyond. Sitges station (Rodalies R2 Sud) is the nearest train stop. Steep, uneven sections make it unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

What visitors say

Visitors describe a relaxed, clothing-optional scene dominated by gay men, with mixed naturists also present, set against an attractive natural backdrop of cliffs and clear water. Most reviewers stress that the walk in is longer and rougher than expected and that you should allow plenty of time and wear proper shoes. The beach bar is appreciated but some find it expensive, so bringing water and food is a common tip. Reports differ on crowding: some call it secluded, others say it is busy on summer weekends.

Legal context

Since the 1989 reform of the Spanish Penal Code, public nudity is not an offence in itself, and the Spanish Naturist Federation notes that nudism is legally permitted on any beach unless a local ordinance says otherwise. L'Home Mort is listed by the FEN as a beach of naturist tradition; we found no Sitges ordinance restricting nudity here.

Naturism at Platja de l'Home Mort sits under Spain's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
