About Platja Binigaus

Binigaus is a long, undeveloped beach on Menorca's south coast in the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran, immediately west of the resort beach of Sant Tomàs. Together with Sant Adeodat it forms a stretch of roughly a kilometre of golden sand beyond the rocky point of Es Codrell, ending where the Binigaus gorge (Barranc de Binigaus) reaches the sea. The far western end, where cliffs and scrub come right down to the sand, is the part favoured by nude bathers, and the Spanish Naturist Federation lists Binigaus among Menorca's beaches of nudist tradition. The beach has no buildings and no services; parts of the shoreline are pebbly, which makes getting into the water awkward. Bathing is usually calm. From the beach you can walk up the gorge to the large Cova des Coloms cave. Local residents have campaigned to keep the beach free of sunbeds and umbrellas, and it remains a natural, quiet alternative to busy Sant Tomàs, although clothed and nude visitors mix.

Getting there

From Es Migjorn Gran drive about 4 km south to the resort of Sant Tomàs. Park at the car park at the entrance to the residential area (some guides use the Es Bruc car park instead) and walk west along the coast; the Camí de Cavalls coastal path runs behind the beaches. The quieter western end is the furthest part from the car park, so allow time for the walk over sand and path. There are no services on Binigaus itself, so bring water and shade. Not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Visitors describe Binigaus as a peaceful, unspoilt beach that feels very different from neighbouring Sant Tomàs, with nude bathers mostly at the far western end and clothed visitors closer to Sant Tomàs. Reviewers like the clear water and the walk to the Cova des Coloms, but warn that the shore is pebbly in places, making it awkward to get into the sea, and that there is nothing to buy, so supplies must be carried in.

Legal context

Spain has no national law against public nudity, and nude bathing is lawful on any beach unless a municipal bylaw restricts it. Menorca has no officially designated nudist beaches; Binigaus is listed by the Spanish Naturist Federation as a beach of nudist tradition and nude use is concentrated at its western end. No enforcement problems were found; a residents' petition has opposed installing sunbed concessions.

Naturism at Platja Binigaus sits under Spain's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
