About Pedn Vounder Beach

Pedn Vounder is a tidal beach below the cliffs of Treryn Dinas on the south coast of West Cornwall, between Porthcurno and the hamlet of Treen, a few miles from Land's End. At high tide it shrinks to a small cove of fine white-gold sand; as the tide drops it opens into a long sandbar running hundreds of metres in both directions, with shallow turquoise lagoons and, at very low water, a link toward Porthcurno. It has a long-standing reputation as one of Cornwall's best-known naturist beaches, but it is not officially designated and there is no separate nude section: British Naturism estimates the crowd at roughly half naturist and half clothed. The more secluded inlets in the cliffs give extra privacy but are cut off at high tide. The beach shelves at high water, and the National Trust warns of rip currents. Its fame grew after it appeared in the television series Poldark, and in recent summers people queued to get down the final section of the path. In August 2025 the National Trust, which manages the land, closed the cliff path because erosion had left a near-vertical drop of about six metres at the bottom, and it directed visitors to Porthcurno instead.

Getting there

Access has been closed by the National Trust since August 2025 because the cliff path eroded; check the Trust's notices before going. Before the closure, visitors parked at Treen (closer, quieter and cheaper; postcode TR19 6LF) or at Porthcurno, both off the B3315 and served by buses. From Treen, a path leads south to the South West Coast Path and down a steep, narrow track; the last 15 to 20 metres is a rock scramble that is unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility or a fear of heights. Cafés and toilets are in Treen and Porthcurno.

What visitors say

Visitors describe the beach as one of the most beautiful in Britain, with white sand and clear lagoons at low tide, and say the mix of nude and clothed beachgoers is generally relaxed. The near-universal warning is about the descent: a steep, crumbling path ending in a rock scramble that some find frightening. In recent summers reports focused on overcrowding, queues on the path and frequent call-outs for the emergency services, which led to the 2025 closure. Regulars advise checking tide times, as the beach almost disappears at high tide.

Legal context

Pedn Vounder has no official naturist designation; nudity has long been customary but it is a shared beach used by clothed visitors too. Since August 2025 the National Trust has closed the path to the beach for safety, so access is currently restricted.

Naturism at Pedn Vounder Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
