About Normans Bay

Normans Bay is a tiny coastal hamlet in East Sussex between Pevensey Bay and Cooden, about 6 miles north-east of Eastbourne and 4 miles west of Bexhill, backed by the flat Pevensey Levels marshes. Its shingle beach has been used by naturists for more than 30 years, although it has never been designated. The naturist section is about 300 yards long and covers most of the shore between the East Stream outfall and the Wallers Haven outfall. A footpath runs behind it and clothed walkers pass through; the two groups have long coexisted without trouble. The beach is shingle that drops quite steeply at high tide, with sand exposed at low tide and old wooden groynes almost buried in the stones. There is little shelter from the frequent onshore and cross-shore winds, and no toilets or refreshments anywhere nearby. On clear days you can see along the coast to Beachy Head. It is very quiet even in good weather, used by a mix of singles, couples and small groups, with single men in the majority. Its big advantage is a railway station a few minutes' walk away.

Getting there

Normans Bay station (Southern, East Coastway line) has hourly trains and is about a 10-minute walk from the naturist section. By car, there is no car park: Coast Road in Normans Bay is private with no parking, and Herbrand Walk where Sluice Lane meets the coast gets very congested in summer. Better options are to park in residential roads near Cooden Beach station and walk about a mile, or in Pevensey Bay village (via Coast Road, signed Beachlands) and walk just over a mile. Cycling is popular. Shingle; not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Visitors describe it as very quiet and easy-going, with clothed walkers on the path behind causing no friction. The main complaints are parking (none, and congested roads) and the lack of any facilities or shelter from wind. The crowd is mostly single men, which some find off-putting, though couples and groups also visit. The train is the recommended way to arrive.

Legal context

Nudity itself is not an offence in England and Wales; the exposure offence (Sexual Offences Act 2003, s.66) requires intent to cause alarm or distress, and police and CPS guidance treat ordinary naturism as lawful. Normans Bay is not an official naturist beach and has no signs; it has been used for naturism for decades without designation.

Naturism at Normans Bay sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
