About Nido dell'Aquila

Nido dell'Aquila (the Eagle's Nest) is a stretch of the long sandy shore inside the Parco Naturale di Rimigliano, between San Vincenzo and the Gulf of Baratti on the Etruscan Coast of Tuscany. The park is a narrow belt of dunes, maquis and stone pines between the Strada della Principessa and the sea, so the beach feels wild even though it is only a few kilometres from a busy resort. Naturism is practised on a section of the beach roughly 300 metres south of the point where the path from the road reaches the sand; regulars have long marked the area with a large yellow kite. The beach is fine sand with gently shelving water and no natural shade apart from the dune edge. Nude bathers have used this coast since the 1970s, and several guides say the municipality of San Vincenzo assigned the stretch to naturism in 2010, which is why it is often described as the only authorised nude beach in Tuscany. It is popular: the regional tourism board puts weekend numbers between May and September at several hundred naturists, so it is far from secluded in high summer. Couples, older regulars and families all use it, alongside clothed beach-goers outside the naturist stretch.

Getting there

Drive south from San Vincenzo on the Strada della Principessa, the road that runs parallel to the sea towards Populonia. The regional tourism board's directions are to stop at the second of two houses on the sea side of the road, about 200 m apart (one renovated, one demolished), take the path down through the pines to the beach and then walk about 300 m south along the sand. Parking is at the roadside in the pinewood lay-bys and fills early on summer weekends. The walk is flat and short but on sand, and there is no step-free route onto the beach.

What visitors say

Guides and regulars describe a relaxed, well-established naturist beach with a strong community feel, crowded on summer weekends and much quieter on weekdays and in late spring or September. The sand and water are generally praised, and the pinewood setting gives a natural feel. Visitors advise arriving early for roadside parking, bringing a parasol because there is no shade on the sand, and walking far enough south to be clearly within the naturist stretch, as the area near the access path is mixed.

Legal context

Toscana Promozione (Visit Tuscany) lists Nido dell'Aquila as a naturist beach where naturism is practised on a stretch of the shore. Several guides state that the Comune di San Vincenzo assigned the stretch to naturist use in 2010, but we did not see the municipal act itself (checked 2026). Italian courts have generally held that simple nudity on a beach habitually used by naturists is not an offence against public decency, but keep to the naturist stretch.

Naturism at Nido dell'Aquila sits under Italy's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

How do I find the nude section?

From the path off the Strada della Principessa, walk about 300 m south along the beach. Regulars have traditionally flown a large yellow kite there.

Is it crowded?

On summer weekends it can draw several hundred naturists, according to the regional tourism board. Weekdays and the shoulder months are much quieter.

Are there facilities?

There are no services on the naturist stretch, so bring water, food and a parasol. Shops and bars are in San Vincenzo.
