About Newborough Warren - Malltraeth Bay - Anglesey
Malltraeth Bay is the northern part of the great Newborough beach on Anglesey's south-west corner, beginning at the narrow neck of sand that joins Llanddwyn Island to the mainland and running north-west towards the Cefni estuary at Malltraeth. It is backed by the pines of Newborough Forest, where red squirrels live, and by the protected dunes of Newborough Warren, with wide views to the mountains of Snowdonia and the Llŷn Peninsula. British Naturism describes it as a fine sandy beach that, while never an official naturist beach, has been popular with naturists for decades. Because it is a long walk from the car park, it is much emptier than the main beach; regulars suggest going 15 to 20 minutes past Llanddwyn Island for real space. The beach is flat and exposed, so wind can be a problem, but the water is shallow and the sand clean. Llanddwyn Island itself, with its lighthouse and ruined church, is a popular stop on the way. There are no facilities beyond the car park.
Getting there
Follow the A4080 to Newborough (Niwbwrch) and the beach signs through the forest to the main car park (postcode LL61 6SG); entry is charged per car (£5 according to British Naturism in 2020) and it fills early in summer. Toilets are at the car park. Walk onto the beach and turn right (sea on your right) for about three-quarters of a mile to the isthmus of Llanddwyn Island, where Malltraeth Bay begins, then continue north. Forest paths also reach the beach. Allow 30 to 45 minutes on foot; there is no wheelchair access to this section.
What visitors say
Visitors describe Malltraeth Bay as tranquil, clean and often almost empty, especially midweek, with only the odd walker or dog walker passing. Long-term regulars report years of visits without problems, and a gay group is said to use the area regularly. The main drawbacks are the long walk and the exposed, windy shore. Some advise discretion because families do walk out past Llanddwyn in high season and the reserve warden patrols the beach.

Legal context
There is no designation scheme for nude beaches in England and Wales and nudity in itself is not an offence; the Sexual Offences Act 2003 exposure offence requires intent to cause alarm or distress. The beach is within the Newborough Warren nature reserve; naturist guides report a warden who has objected to nudity and advise covering up if challenged, and visitors must keep out of the protected dunes (reports up to 2020).
