About Naturist section of Hill Head Beach

The naturist section of Hill Head beach is the stretch known as Meon Shore, on the Hampshire side of the Solent near Stubbington, between Hill Head and the mouth of Southampton Water. It lies north-west of the Hill Head beach huts and Titchfield Haven nature reserve, below low cliffs topped by a footpath and scrub. British Naturism lists Meon Shore as a naturist beach, and naturists have used it unofficially for many years, mostly a handful at a time: usually single men and a few couples, rarely more than a dozen. The beach is mainly shingle with patches of sand. At high tide it shelves enough for a swim; at low tide it becomes flat sand and you may need to wade 200 yards before the water reaches your knees. There is no shade and nothing on the beach. What makes it distinctive is the view: the Isle of Wight across the water and constant shipping in and out of Southampton, from dinghies to cruise liners. Walkers, horse riders and kitesurfers use the shore too, and gaps in the cliff-top bushes mean some spots are overlooked, so choose a place carefully. Quieter spots lie further north-west, toward some derelict pillboxes.

Getting there

Park on Cliff Road at Hill Head (PO14 4HN), along the coast opposite the nature reserve lakes, or at the Chilling (Thatchers Copse) car park on Meon Road (PO14 4HH). Parking charges have been reported to change, so check on arrival. From Cliff Road walk north-west along the beach or the easier cliff-top path for about three-quarters of a mile, past the chalets. From Chilling, follow the footpath south-west to the shore. Shingle underfoot; not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Visitors describe a quiet, unofficial spot with few people, good Solent views and passing shipping. Downsides mentioned are shingle, no shade, very shallow water at low tide and being overlooked from the cliff path, with some reports of unwanted staring. Reports differ on whether nearby parking is free. Most advise walking well past the chalets and swimming around high tide.

Legal context

Nudity itself is not an offence in England and Wales; the exposure offence (Sexual Offences Act 2003, s.66) requires intent to cause alarm or distress, and police and CPS guidance treat ordinary naturism as lawful. Meon Shore is not designated or signed; use is unofficial and low-key. Other shore users generally do not object to discreet sunbathing; inappropriate behaviour should be reported to police.

Naturism at Naturist section of Hill Head Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
