About Nacktbadebereich 3: Isarinsel Oberföhring
Isarinsel Oberföhring is one of six nude-bathing zones that the City of Munich designates along the Isar and in the Englischer Garten under its bathing-clothing ordinance (Badekleidungsverordnung). It lies in the north-east of the city on the east bank of the river, on the long island between the Isar and the side channel at Oberföhring. The city describes the zone as running from Mittlere-Isar-Straße, up to a point about 100 metres short of the footbridge across to the Englischer Garten, and north as far as the city boundary; the exact limits are drawn on maps attached to the ordinance, and signs on site mark the area. Opposite, on the west bank, is the Schwabinger Bucht zone in the northern Englischer Garten, which is also designated. The setting is the semi-natural Isar floodplain, with gravel banks, meadows and riverside woodland rather than a built beach. The Isar is cold, fast and changes level after rain or releases from upstream weirs, and the city stresses that nude-bathing permission does not override any bathing ban or safety rule on the river. Outside the mapped zone swimwear is required.
Getting there
The zone is on the east bank of the Isar in Oberföhring, north of Mittlere-Isar-Straße, and is reached on foot or by bike along the riverside paths. From the Englischer Garten side, cross the Isar on the footbridge in the north of the park and turn north along the east bank; the zone begins about 100 metres from the bridge. There is no dedicated car park; cycling is the usual way to arrive. Paths are unsurfaced in places and the gravel banks are not wheelchair accessible.
Legal context
Nude bathing is permitted inside the mapped area under Munich's Badekleidungsverordnung, as listed on the city's FKK page (checked 2026). Outside the six Isar/Englischer Garten zones swimwear is required for public bathing and sunbathing; nudity elsewhere can be treated as an administrative offence if others feel disturbed. The permission does not lift bathing bans or other safety rules on the Isar.
