About Meech Lake Nude Coves
The Meech Lake nude coves are secluded spots on the north-east part of Meech Lake in Gatineau Park, Quebec, a short drive from Ottawa. The best-known area is a small sandy beach shaded by pines near the ruins of the Carbide Willson mill and falls, reached by a woodland trail from O'Brien Beach. O'Brien Beach itself is a busy family textile beach, and nude use happened only beyond the bridge on Trail 36, in the coves and on the rocks upstream. The water is clear and good for swimming. For decades the area drew nude sunbathers, including a sizeable gay male crowd, mixing with clothed hikers. That history matters less now than its legal record: the National Capital Commission, which manages the park, treats nudity as illegal, and police ran arrest operations in 2011 and 2012. Anyone thinking of going should regard it as a place where nude sunbathing has been contested for years rather than a tolerated naturist beach.
Getting there
From Ottawa take Highway 5 north to exit 12 for Gatineau Park and follow the parkway about 6 km to the O'Brien Beach parking lot on Meech Lake. Walk north on Trail 36 past the changing cabins into the woods; after about 10 minutes cross a small bridge over a narrow part of the lake and take the left fork to the sandy cove. The trail continues to the Carbide Willson ruins. Trails are packed earth with roots and some slopes; not wheelchair accessible beyond O'Brien Beach.
What visitors say
Older visitor and press accounts describe a pretty, shaded cove with good swimming that was long used by nude sunbathers, many of them gay men, alongside clothed hikers on the trail. Complaints about sexual behaviour in the woods led directly to the police crackdowns, and reports since then suggest far fewer people risk nudity. Some recent guides say enforcement is now rare, but nothing official confirms that, and sources disagree.

Legal context
The NCC excluded nudism from permitted activities in its Gatineau Park plan (2005) on the basis that it is illegal. In September 2011 police arrested five men near Trail 36 and said anyone found nude would be charged, followed by further sweeps with NCC and RCMP help in 2012; the FCN itself warns that nudity here can lead to criminal charges.
Naturism at Meech Lake Nude Coves sits under Canada's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
