About Lower Largo Beach

Lower Largo is a former fishing village on Largo Bay on the south coast of Fife, best known as the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk, the castaway behind Robinson Crusoe. East of the village a long sandy beach curves around the bay. British Naturism lists a naturist section in the middle of this beach, by the remains of the old salmon nets, reached by walking east from a car park at the end of a track out of the village. The water stays shallow for a long way out, which makes paddling easy, but check tide times and currents before swimming. There are no facilities on the beach. BN describes the access as private and says that as long as visitors park considerately and leave no litter, nobody minds.

Getting there

Leave Lower Largo heading east and turn down the track after a single cottage on the right, following it to the car park. From the beach, walk east to the old salmon nets in the middle of the bay. Lower Largo is served by buses along the Fife coast. The track and beach are not suitable for wheelchairs.

Legal context

There is no official naturist designation on Largo Bay; the access track is private. Scotland has no designated nude beaches and no specific offence of simple nudity; prosecution would normally need conduct likely to cause fear or alarm (breach of the peace or public indecency).

Naturism at Lower Largo Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
