About Leysdown Beach East
Leysdown East is the naturist beach at the eastern end of the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent, about 2 km south-east of Leysdown-on-Sea on the way to Shell Ness, facing the outer Thames Estuary. It is one of the few UK beaches described by British Naturism as official: the naturist area, about 250 m long, is marked by signs and starts roughly 100 m past a row of old wooden chalets east of Leysdown's main town beach. The beach is fairly wide coarse sand and crushed shell, with muddy patches in places, and is not greatly affected by the tide. Most people settle in the grassy dunes behind it, which extend about 50 m inland and have hollows that give shelter from the estuary wind. The water shelves gently and is not rough, so it suits less confident swimmers, although being estuary water it is never clear. The area beyond, toward Shell Ness, is part of the Swale nature reserve and is good for birdwatching. Access has become harder: the beach car park was dug up in 2021 and part of the coast road is private, so a walk is now needed.
Getting there
Reach Sheppey via the A249 bridge, then the B2231 through Eastchurch to Leysdown. Drive through the town and along Shellness Road. Since 2021 the old car park behind the beach is gone; park on the sea wall beside Shellness Road before it becomes a private unadopted road, then walk east past the wooden chalets, a level walk of about 15 to 20 minutes. The track is potholed. A bus from Sheerness to Leysdown is reported to be possible. Nearest shops and toilets are in Leysdown.
What visitors say
Visitors value the signed naturist area, the sheltered dune hollows and calm, shallow water. Complaints focus on access: the lost car park, a potholed track and a longer walk than before. Several reports mention muddy patches and murky estuary water, and say the beach can be busy on hot weekends since repairs to the track.

Legal context
Nudity itself is not an offence in England and Wales; the exposure offence (Sexual Offences Act 2003, s.66) requires intent to cause alarm or distress, and police and CPS guidance treat ordinary naturism as lawful. British Naturism describes the 250 m Leysdown East area as official and marked by signs, and says visitors respect its boundaries. Reports from 2021 note some local discouragement of public access along the private part of the road.
Naturism at Leysdown Beach East sits under United Kingdom's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
