About Königsee
The Königsee is a former gravel pit at Zellhausen, part of Mainhausen in the Offenbach district of Hesse, close to the Main and the Bavarian border near Seligenstadt. It is run as a supervised, fee-paying bathing lake by the municipality's own company for its campsite and bathing lakes (Eigenbetrieb Campingplatz und Badeseen Mainhausen), with a cash desk at the entrance. Visitors describe a large lawn and a sandy beach in the main (swimwear) area, a playground, beach volleyball, toilets, showers and a kiosk, plus floating platforms and islands in the water. Several visitor comments over the years describe a separate FKK lawn with its own access to the lake, fenced and screened off from the textile area by a hedge; others call it plain and say reeds limit the view of the lake from that section. The nude area is said to be used mostly by an older crowd. Lifeguards supervise bathing in season. The municipality's other lake, the Badesee Mainflingen, has an officially mentioned FKK area and is the better-known naturist option locally.
Getting there
The lake is on the edge of Zellhausen, Mainhausen (63533), between Seligenstadt and Babenhausen. Visitors arrive by car or bicycle; parking at the lake has been reported as free but limited, so arrive early on hot days. Entry is paid at the on-site cash desk (2022 price reported as 3.50 EUR adults, 2.20 EUR reduced; check current rates). The FKK lawn is inside the paid area, separated by fence and hedge. Opening in 2022 was daily 9:00-20:00 in fine weather during the summer season.
What visitors say
Visitors generally rate the Königsee as clean and pleasant, with a lifeguard presence and a good kiosk, though one notes the food is pricey. The FKK lawn is described by several people as clearly separated by fence and hedge with its own lake access; opinions differ on its quality, from 'small but very pleasant' to 'spartan', with reeds blocking the view in parts. The naturist crowd is reported as mostly older. Parking fills up on hot days.

Amenities
Legal context
Germany has no general ban on public nudity; at a fee-paying municipal lake the operator's house rules apply. Nude bathing is reported only in the fenced FKK lawn, not in the main area; no published bathing rules covering it were found (checked 2026).
Naturism at Königsee sits under Germany's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
