About Isar - Maria Einsiedel
Maria Einsiedel is one of six nude-bathing areas that the City of Munich designates under its bathing-clothing ordinance (Badekleidungsverordnung), and the southernmost of the city's Isar zones. It lies in the Isar floodplain on the west side of the river in the Thalkirchen/Hinterbrühl area of southern Munich. According to the city, the zone begins roughly 200 metres south of the Marienklause and runs south to the southern end of the Hinterbrühler See; only the area inside those limits, as shown on the city's map and the signs on site, is covered. The ground is typical Isar floodplain: open gravel banks along the water with meadow and riverside woodland behind. It should not be confused with the Naturbad Maria Einsiedel, a paid municipal open-air pool next door that has its own separate FKK lawns. The Isar here is a fast, cold alpine river; the city warns of shifting currents, eddies, weirs, stones and roots, and stresses that the nude zone does not make the adjacent water safe or override bathing bans. Further downstream the city's other Isar zones are at Brudermühlbrücke and the Flaucher gravel bank.
Getting there
The zone is in southern Munich on the west side of the Isar, between the Marienklause and the Hinterbrühler See, and is easiest to reach on foot or by bike along the Isar riverside paths that run through the Thalkirchen floodplain. The U3 stop Thalkirchen (Tierpark) is the nearest U-Bahn station, from which the zone is reached on foot through the riverside parkland (check the city map for the exact start). Car parking in the area is limited and fills on summer weekends. Paths are flat but unpaved toward the gravel banks, so wheelchair access to the water is poor.
Amenities
Legal context
Munich's Badekleidungsverordnung requires swimwear for public bathing and sunbathing except in six designated areas, of which Maria Einsiedel on the Isar is one; nudity outside the marked limits can be fined as an administrative offence. Since 15 May 2026 the city's bath rules also allow topless bathing for everyone. The designation does not lift Isar bathing bans or safety rules (city of Munich, checked 2026).
Naturism at Isar - Maria Einsiedel sits under Germany's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
Full country law: Germany public nudity guide.
Naturist status confirmed against an official source on 24 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Is nude bathing legal at Maria Einsiedel?
Yes, within the marked zone. The City of Munich lists Maria Einsiedel as one of its six official nude-bathing areas, from about 200 m south of the Marienklause to the south end of the Hinterbrühler See.
Is this the same as the Naturbad Maria Einsiedel?
No. The Naturbad is a paid municipal pool next door with its own FKK lawns; the official nude zone is the free public stretch of Isar floodplain.
Is it safe to swim in the Isar here?
The city warns that the Isar has changing currents, eddies, weirs and submerged obstacles. Only swim where bathing is permitted and be cautious, especially after rain.
How do I get there without a car?
Take the U3 to Thalkirchen (Tierpark) and walk south along the west-bank Isar paths, or cycle along the river.
