About Isar - Brudermühlbrücke
This is one of six areas where the City of Munich allows nude bathing on the Isar and in the Englischer Garten. It lies in Sendling/Untergiesing, on the east side of the southern Isar flood bed, between two crossings: the zone starts 50 m south of the Braunauer railway bridge and runs south to a point 100 m north of the Brudermühlbrücke road bridge. The ground is the river's broad flood bed, with gravel banks along the water, part of the renaturalised Isar that also includes the busier Flaucher area a little further south. Only the area shown on the city's map and marked by signs on site counts as a nude zone; outside it, swimwear is required. Compared with the Flaucher gravel bank, this stretch is less well known. The Isar here is cold and fast-flowing, its level changes with the weather, and the city's bathing bans and safety rules still apply inside nude zones. The stony ground makes a thick mat and water shoes useful.
Getting there
The zone is on the east bank of the Isar in central-south Munich, between the Braunauer railway bridge and the Brudermühlbrücke. The nearest U-Bahn station is Brudermühlstraße (U3), a short walk west of the bridge; from there cross the Brudermühlbrücke and go down to the river on the east side, then head north along the flood bed. The Isar cycle paths on both banks make cycling the easiest option. Parking near the river is very limited. Access to the gravel banks is over uneven ground and is not wheelchair friendly.

Munich's Badekleidungsverordnung requires swimwear for public bathing, including sunbathing, everywhere in the city except six designated nude areas, of which this is one; the official map and on-site signs define its limits, and violations outside the zones can be fined as an administrative offence (muenchen.de, 2026). Since a 2019 council decision, topless bathing is allowed along the Isar generally. Bathing bans and safety rules continue to apply inside the nude area.
