About Inverness Beach
Inverness is a former coal-mining village on the west coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, facing the Gulf of St. Lawrence along the Ceilidh Trail (Route 19). Its long sand beach runs for kilometres below the golf links, and its far stretches are used informally by people swimming and sunbathing nude, well away from the busy main entrance by the boardwalk. The Federation of Canadian Naturists lists an 'Inverness Beach' among Canada's unofficial nude beaches, describing a striking local favourite where a waterfall drops onto the shore, with a coastline it compares to Big Sur. Its directions, however, point not to the town beach but to the coast south-west of the village, along the rough gravel Sight Point Road toward the Cape Mabou Highlands, followed by a walk of about 1.5 km. Visitors to the town beach report that walking a long way from the main access points gives plenty of space and privacy. There are no facilities away from the town end, and the Gulf water is bracing outside high summer.
Getting there
Take Route 104 to the Canso Causeway, then Route 19 (Ceilidh Trail) about 85 km north along the west coast. For the FCN location, turn left onto Sight Point Road just before the old railway line into Inverness, follow it about 10 km (rough gravel, 30 to 40 minutes), park near the farm buildings, and walk about 1.5 km to the beach path. The town beach has a parking area and boardwalk at the main entrance; quieter sections require a long walk along the sand. No public transport.
Amenities
Legal context
Canada's Criminal Code (s. 174) makes nudity in a public place an offence, but a prosecution needs the consent of the provincial Attorney General, which is why tolerated beaches exist. Only Wreck Beach and Hanlan's Point are officially clothing-optional (FCN, 2026); Nothing at Inverness is designated or signed for nudity; use is informal and discreet.
Naturism at Inverness Beach sits under Canada's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
