About Horsey Beach
The beach between Winterton-on-Sea and Horsey Gap on the east Norfolk coast, a few miles north of Great Yarmouth, is a long-established naturist walk listed by British Naturism. Behind it lie the Winterton Dunes, a national nature reserve, and the beach itself is wide sand with shifting sand bars, backed first by dunes and then, further north, by a 1960s concrete sea wall with rock groynes and boulders of Norwegian rock armour. Naturism is generally accepted once you are about a quarter of a mile north of the Winterton car park on most days, and the main naturist stretch begins where the concrete wall and rock groynes start, running north to just short of Horsey (the wall carries painted numbers, roughly 47 to 55, that regulars use as markers). The North Sea wind is the defining feature, so people bring windbreaks or tuck into the rock armour. The coast is home to a large grey seal colony that has grown sharply and draws many seal watchers, and in the breeding season part of the foreshore may be fenced off for little terns. At low tide the exposed sand is good for shells; at high tide the channels between sand bars can produce strong rip currents.
Getting there
Two starting points. From Winterton-on-Sea, enter the village by the church, go straight past the shop and chip shop to the pay-and-display beach car park, then walk north along the beach or dunes for up to 2.75 miles (gentle, flat). Alternatively, start from the National Trust car park at Horsey Windpump (check closing times, the gate can lock you in), walk past the Nelson Head pub, follow the track toward the sea and turn south before the beach onto the sea defences: about 2 miles. No facilities on the beach; Winterton has a shop and café. Soft sand makes it unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Legal context
Nudity itself is not an offence in England and Wales; the exposure offence (Sexual Offences Act 2003, s.66) requires intent to cause alarm or distress, and police and CPS guidance treat ordinary naturism as lawful. The Winterton-Horsey stretch is not designated or signed for naturism; it is a traditional, tolerated naturist area. Seal pupping and tern nesting areas may be fenced seasonally and must be respected.
Naturism at Horsey Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Frequently asked questions
Is Horsey an official nude beach?
No. It is an unofficial but long-standing naturist stretch between Winterton and Horsey Gap, listed by British Naturism.
Where does the naturist area start?
About a quarter of a mile north of Winterton car park, with the main area beginning where the concrete sea wall and rock groynes start, running north toward Horsey.
Where do I park?
At the pay car park in Winterton-on-Sea, or at the National Trust Horsey Windpump car park (check gate times).
Is swimming safe?
Take care at high tide: deep channels between sand bars can have strong rip currents, especially for children and weak swimmers.
Will I see seals?
Very likely. The grey seal colony here has grown a lot; keep your distance and follow any fencing.
