About Hooksiel

Hooksiel is a small harbour resort in the Wangerland municipality on the western shore of the Jade Bight, the wide North Sea inlet across from Wilhelmshaven. Its Strandbad is a free-entry beach complex, run by Wangerland Touristik, that sits on the dike in front of the village. It is divided into separate sections: an ordinary sand beach, a dog beach, a nude (FKK) beach, and an FKK beach where dogs are also allowed. The tourism office says nude visitors have been welcome here for many years. Beach chairs (Strandkörbe) can be booked for the FKK section in the same way as for the textile beach. The beach is sand with some dunes, backed by lawn and the dike. Because it is on the Wadden Sea, the water goes out a long way at low tide, so swimming depends on the tides, which the tourism site publishes. Facilities in the Strandbad include toilets (one accessible), a baby-changing room, showers, a kiosk and snack bar, a playground and a beach sauna, and a DLRG lifeguard station is listed beside the bathing beach. Outside the Strandbad, behind the dunes, there is also a wider natural beach. A kite school and the outer harbour with fish sellers and restaurants are a few minutes away.

Getting there

Hooksiel is about 10 km north of Wilhelmshaven via the coast road. The Strandbad car parks are on Bäderstraße (26434 Wangerland); parking is charged daily from 8:00 to 20:00 by meter or parking app, the guest card no longer covers it, and the first half hour has been reported at one euro. Parking is free outside those hours. Bus line 211 (Hooksiel - Harlesiel) serves the village. Entry to the beach is free; the municipality levies a guest contribution (Gästebeitrag, formerly Kurbeitrag). The Strandbad has an accessible toilet; the beach itself is level sand.

Legal context

The FKK section is a designated part of the municipal Strandbad Hooksiel, confirmed by Wangerland Touristik (2026). In Germany, nudity in designated FKK areas is lawful; elsewhere on public beaches it can be treated as a nuisance under § 118 OWiG, so stay within the signed FKK section. Separately, the operator of the adjacent campsite announced plans to end its naturist camping area from 2027, which the DFK and INF are contesting; this concerns the campsite, not the beach.

Naturism at Hooksiel sits under Germany's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.

Frequently asked questions

Is nude bathing allowed at Hooksiel?

Yes, in the signed FKK section of the Strandbad. Wangerland Touristik lists both an FKK beach and an FKK beach where dogs are allowed.

Does it cost anything to use the beach?

No, all Wangerland beaches are free to enter. Parking is charged from 8:00 to 20:00, and Wangerland levies a guest contribution (Gästebeitrag).

Can I rent a beach chair on the nude beach?

Yes, Strandkörbe can be booked online or at the service points specifically for the FKK section, from mid-April to the end of September.

Can I swim at any time?

No. Hooksiel is on the Wadden Sea, so the water recedes far at low tide; check the tide table on the tourism website and swim around high water.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, there is a dedicated FKK-with-dog section. Dogs must be kept on a lead throughout Wangerland.
