About Holkham Hall Beach

Holkham Bay on the north Norfolk coast, just west of Wells-next-the-Sea, is a huge, flat sweep of fine pale sand backed by pine woods and dunes within the Holkham National Nature Reserve on the Holkham Estate. Naturists use the western end of the beach. The current arrangement allows nudity on the beach only, below the high-tide line, and not in the dunes; British Naturism advises staying at least 100 m from the dune edge. The beach slopes so gently that the sea goes out a very long way at low tide, so BN suggests visiting when low tide falls in the early afternoon. It is open to the cold north wind, so a windbreak is almost essential. Winter storm surges in 2013 and 2014 washed away the front row of dunes, and the recovering marram is fragile, which is one reason the dunes are off limits. Wardens and police patrol from time to time. Regulars include couples and families, and the beach is clean and uncrowded once you walk west.

Getting there

Turn off the A149 coast road at Holkham village opposite the Holkham Hall entrance, by The Victoria pub, onto Lady Anne's Drive (pay parking, NR23 1RJ). From the car park walk about a mile west along the sand, or take the path behind the dunes past the holiday cottage to the crossing path and turn right to the beach, a round trip of about two miles. You must be dressed on the woodland paths. The Norfolk Coasthopper bus stops at Holkham, and National Cycle Route 1 passes nearby. A café with toilets is near the car park. The woodland route is not suitable for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

Visitors praise the space, cleanliness and friendly atmosphere, and say clothed walkers generally leave naturists alone. Complaints focus on the constant wind, the long walk, and wardens moving people away from the dune edge onto damp sand. Some regulars miss the former dune shelter; others welcome the stricter rules after past problems in the dunes. Several suggest coming midweek and near low tide.

Legal context

In July 2013 the Holkham Estate, the Crown Estate and Norfolk Police withdrew naturist status after complaints about behaviour in the dunes. The Crown Estate lifted its ban on the foreshore later in 2013, and from summer 2014 the estate allowed naturism on the beach but not in the dunes. A 2025 report says the beach signs have been removed and only dune-edge map boards remain.

Naturism at Holkham Hall Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.

Frequently asked questions

Is Holkham a naturist beach?

Yes, naturists use the western end of the beach. Since 2014 nudity is accepted on the beach itself but not in the dunes.

Where do I park?

At the pay car park on Lady Anne's Drive opposite Holkham Hall, then walk about a mile west.

Why can't I sit in the dunes?

The dunes are a fragile nature reserve damaged by storms, and past behaviour problems there led to the 2013 ban. Stay on the open beach.

Do I need a windbreak?

Yes. The beach faces north and is almost always windy.

Are there toilets?

Yes, at the café near the car park, not on the beach.
