About Hanlan's Point Beach
Hanlan's Point Beach sits on the western shore of the Toronto Islands, facing open Lake Ontario, just south of the runways of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. A legally designated clothing-optional zone occupies part of the shoreline; according to the City's 2002 review, that zone ran about 1,000 metres along the westerly edge of Hanlan's Point and was 50 to 60 metres wide. Signs and fencing mark its limits, and the rest of the beach is clothing-required, so check the markers before undressing. Guides say to walk south from the ferry dock, past the airport fence, to reach it. The sand is soft and the view runs out over the lake rather than toward the downtown skyline. The zone began as a one-year pilot voted through by City Council in May 1999, was extended through 2001, and was made permanent in April 2002; staff and the police Marine Unit may resize it, but not below its 2001 extent. During the pilot the City counted 650 to 700 users on hot summer weekends and reported no more incidents than at other city beaches. Local naturist groups, including the Federation of Canadian Naturists, helped set it up. The point is less developed than Centre Island, so bring food and water.
Getting there
Take the Hanlan's Point ferry from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at the foot of Bay Street in downtown Toronto; private water taxis also serve the island. Check the timetable before you go, as sailings to Hanlan's are less frequent than to Centre Island. There is no car access to the island. From the Hanlan's dock, follow the paved path south past the airport fence; walk times quoted range from about 5 to 15 minutes. The signed clothing-optional section is reached over sand at the end of the path.
