About Flexbury Beach

The naturist area known as Flexbury is a series of small sandy coves on the north Cornwall coast just over a mile north of Bude, below the cliffs between Crooklets and Northcott Mouth and named after the Bude suburb of Flexbury. Naturists use the coves roughly a quarter of a mile south of Northcott Mouth, towards Bude. The sand is smooth and firm at low tide, and rocky ridges running out from the cliffs separate the coves and give shelter from the wind. This is an Atlantic surf coast with strong waves and possible cross-currents on the ebb, so swimming needs care and local knowledge. There are no facilities in the coves. The beach is usually quiet: one visitor estimated that even on a busy day there might be ten or twelve people, a mix of naturists, dog walkers and people walking along the waterline at low tide. Because the coves are linked by the low-tide beach, the tide decides how you get there: at high water the route from the Bude side can be cut off.

Getting there

Either walk north along the beach or the coast path from Bude, about 1.5 km, or drive north via Flexbury and Poughill to the car park at Northcott Mouth (satnav EX23 9EG) and walk about a quarter of a mile south along the shore. The beach route is passable only around low and mid tide; check tide times. The National Trust beach at Sandymouth, further north, has a seasonal cafe and toilets. Access is over sand and rocks and is not suitable for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

The few published visitor accounts call Flexbury a quiet, secluded spot with good waves and smooth sand at low tide, worth the walk. Visitors warn that the tide can block the approach from Bude, and one asked whether swimming is safe given currents on the ebb, so check conditions locally.
