About FKK Beach Ciganka

Ciganka, also called Gipsy Beach, is one of three naturist beaches around Lopar, the low, sandy north-eastern corner of the island of Rab. It sits on the north-facing shore of the wooded San Marino peninsula and looks out across the Kvarner channel toward the islands of Krk and Grgur. The Rab and Lopar tourist boards both list it as a naturist beach. Nudity is allowed rather than required, so swimsuits are also acceptable; of Lopar's three FKK beaches only neighbouring Stolac is nude-only, while Sahara, like Ciganka, is mixed. The beach is best known for its sculpted sand: wind and sea have carved the soft sandstone and sand into dunes and pyramid-like shapes, and you can lie on sand or on flat rock shelves. The water is clear and green-blue. Because it faces north-east, it catches the bura wind, which brings windsurfers on breezy days but can also make it cool and choppy. There is no beach infrastructure: no bar, toilets or showers, although pine forest comes down close behind it. Dogs are not allowed to swim here; the nearby Zad Vele Stene beach is set aside for them.

Getting there

From Lopar village follow the road toward the San Marino peninsula and the pine woods on its north side. You can drive close to the beach and leave the car in the shade of the pine forest above it; the tourist boards give no parking charge or capacity. From the parking area it is roughly a 100 m walk down to the sand. There is no public transport stop at the beach. The final path is short but unpaved, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

Guides and visitor write-ups single out the unusual sand formations and clear water as the reason to come, and describe a quieter, more natural setting than Lopar's famous family beaches, with no tourist facilities. The crowd is mixed: nude bathers share the cove with some clothed visitors, since swimwear is accepted. Windsurfers appreciate the bura, but on windy days sunbathers may find it exposed. Visitors advise bringing water, food, sunscreen and a hat, as there is nothing to buy on site.
