About Findhorn Bay
Findhorn sits on the Moray Firth coast of north-east Scotland, where Findhorn Bay meets the open sea. The beach used by naturists is East Beach, on the seaward side of the dunes east of Findhorn village, at the start of a continuous stretch of sand and dunes running about seven miles east to Burghead. British Naturism's listing says to walk east from the East Beach car park for about five minutes, or further until you feel comfortable; local skinny dippers use this area. The dunes behind this part of the beach belong to the Findhorn Dunes Trust, a conservation charity. Wartime concrete anti-tank blocks line parts of the shore and can be hidden at high tide, so check the tide before swimming. The views stretch across the firth to the hills of Caithness and the Black Isle, and seals and dolphins are often seen offshore. British Naturism has run its Great British Skinny Dip here, billed as the most northerly in the UK: 31 people swam in September 2024 despite some local objections. Outside such events, nude use is light and informal, and the beach is shared with walkers and dog owners.
Getting there
Drive to Findhorn village (B9011 from Forres) and follow Dunes Road, which becomes a rough track, to the free East Beach car park (postcode IV36 3AB); keep Blue Badge spaces clear. From the car park, cross onto the beach and walk east for about five minutes or further for more privacy. Toilets and cafes are in Findhorn village and at the main beach, about 10 minutes' walk away. The final approach is over soft sand and dunes.
Amenities
Legal context
Scotland has no designated nude beaches and no specific law against simple nudity; prosecution would normally require conduct likely to cause alarm (breach of the peace or public indecency). In September 2024, when a caller asked police to stop the Great British Skinny Dip here, they were told that swimming nude in the sea is not against the law.
Naturism at Findhorn Bay sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
