About Praia da Afurada

Praia da Afurada is a secluded cove on the central Algarve coast between Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, in the municipality of Lagoa, east of the Arade estuary and Portimão. Pine-topped ochre cliffs back a fairly long strip of sand, and the beach has no buildings or services. Beach guides describe it as the main nude beach between Portimão and Carvoeiro, used mostly by Portuguese naturists and locals rather than tourists, with a quieter atmosphere than the better-known nude beaches of the western Algarve. Nude bathers spread along the sand under the cliffs. The water is generally calm in summer, but there is no lifeguard. Because access is awkward, the beach rarely gets crowded even in August. Bring water, food and shade, and stay clear of the cliff base, as Algarve cliffs are prone to rockfalls.

Getting there

Sources disagree on access. A Spanish guide describes a dirt track through the pines from the Ferragudo–Carvoeiro side, with a small parking area nearby and a short, fairly steep walk down. Other guides say the easiest way is along the shore from Praia dos Caneiros at low tide, partly wading, and some visitors say they could only reach it by boat or kayak. Check the tide and current track conditions before going; there is no public transport to the beach and it is not accessible for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

Visitors describe a beautiful, wild cove with clean sand and few people, used largely by local naturists. The main disagreement is about access: some found a track and path from above, while others say they could only get there along the shore at low tide or from the water. Everyone stresses that there are no facilities.

Legal context

Portugal's naturism law (Lei 53/2010) allows nudity only at beaches officially designated for it; Afurada does not appear among the designated beaches we found, so nude use here is informal and tolerated. We found no reports of recent enforcement.

Naturism at Praia da Afurada sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Frequently asked questions

Is Praia da Afurada an official naturist beach?

No. It is a long-standing informal nude beach; Portugal only authorises nudity at designated beaches.

How do I get there?

Either by a dirt track and short walk from the cliff top or along the shore from Praia dos Caneiros at low tide. Check tides first.

Are there facilities?

None. Bring water, food and shade.

Is it the same as Afurada near Porto?

No. This Afurada is a cove in Lagoa on the Algarve, not the fishing village of the same name on the Douro.
