About Feringasee (Feringa Lake)

The Feringasee in Unterföhring, on the north-eastern edge of Munich, is a groundwater lake created in the 1970s by gravel extraction for motorway building and since developed into one of the region's big public recreation areas. The district office gives it about 32 ha of water, roughly 3 km of shoreline, depths to about 7 m and some 21 ha of lawns, with sandy entries in several places. The nude area is official: the peninsula that juts into the lake from the south is designated as an FKK site, with its own kiosk and toilets, shady trees and sunny lawns, and a volleyball court. On hot weekends several hundred nude bathers gather there, and nudity has also spread clockwise along the west shore beyond the peninsula, while the big lawns by the eastern and southern car parks stay textile. Bathing is not allowed on the north shore, which is reserved for windsurfing. Elsewhere there is a restaurant with beer garden, more kiosks, grill zones and a weekend Wasserwacht station. Water quality samples in 2026 were all rated unobjectionable.

Getting there

Cars reach the lake only via Erlbachstraße, Unterföhring. Car park P1 (280 spaces) is closest to the FKK peninsula; P2 and P3 add about 1,600 spaces. From 1 May to 30 September parking costs 3 EUR per car and 1.50 EUR per motorbike, and car parks fill early on hot days. The S-Bahn station Unterföhring (S8) is about 1 km away, roughly 15 minutes on foot east through the media business park past the Sky building and across the fields on a signed path. Cycling is recommended on signposted routes from Munich. An accessible bathing ramp in the south-east is currently closed.

What visitors say

Visitors describe the Feringasee as one of the largest and liveliest nude areas around Munich, with a sociable, mostly older crowd on the peninsula and very busy conditions on hot weekends. People like the kiosk and toilets inside the FKK area, the shade trees and the beer garden across the lake, but some complain of molehill-pocked lawns, sun-cream film and bird droppings in the water, long queues for parking and occasional gawkers. Many recommend arriving by bike or S-Bahn, coming early, and moving to the quieter south-west corner or west shore when the peninsula is full. It is not a place for those seeking solitude.

Legal context

The Landkreis München designates the peninsula as an FKK area (2026), so nudity there is lawful; elsewhere the lake is mixed or textile. Nude bathing on the north shore, where bathing is banned because of the windsurfing zone, is no longer tolerated: police issued warnings and took personal details there in 2016. Dogs are banned from the bathing area in high season (mid-May to end of September).

Naturism at Feringasee (Feringa Lake) sits under Germany's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
