About Epplesee

The Epplesee is a large, deep gravel lake at Rheinstetten-Forchheim, just south of Karlsruhe near the Silberstreifen district and the Karlsruhe trade fair. Gravel is still extracted from a depth of about 60 m, the water level lies well below the surrounding ground and high embankments rise behind the beach. Good winds make it popular for sailing, surfing and kiting as well as swimming. A long, narrow sand beach runs from the big lawn on the east shore round to the west shore. The west bank is the FKK area: it was used for nude bathing for decades, and since 2008 the city has designated it by ordinance and marked it with signs. It is not fenced off, but clothing is not welcome there, and reports put the share of nude visitors at around 90%. Families and couples make up much of the crowd. There is little natural shade, so bring an umbrella. Dogs are banned from the FKK area and the family lawn during the season. The lake gets very busy on hot days and quiet in the evening.

Getting there

The lake is a few kilometres south of Karlsruhe, quickly reached from the A5 (exit Karlsruhe-Süd) or by bike from the city. A large paid car park lies north and north-east of the lake, with tickets sold online; visitors have reported about 3 to 4 EUR a day, and parking on the official car parks is banned between 23:00 and 06:00 in season. Tram and bus stops are within walking distance but not right at the lake. From the car park walk along the shore to the west bank.

What visitors say

Regulars rate it among the best nude lakes in the region: clear water, a long sand beach and a crowd largely made up of families and couples, with the kiosk and rescue service close to the FKK side. Common complaints are litter, including used condoms in the FKK section, cigarette butts and glass on the lawns, off-leash dogs, a loud drinking crowd near the kiosk and the lack of shade. Some also dislike that the FKK and textile zones are not clearly separated.

Legal context

Rheinstetten's bathing-water ordinance (Badegewässerverordnung of 25 June 2024, in force since 26 July 2024) designates a signposted FKK area at the Epplesee and makes it an offence to be nude outside it or anywhere at the neighbouring Fermasee; earlier fines of 35 EUR were reported under the 2008 version. Dogs may not be taken into the FKK area during the season (1 April to 31 October).

Naturism at Epplesee sits under Germany's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
