About Eastney Beach

Eastney Beach lies at the far eastern end of the Portsmouth and Southsea seafront, on the south-east tip of Portsea Island facing the entrance to Langstone Harbour. Some locals call it Fraser Beach, after the former military range behind it. The naturist stretch begins a short way east of the footpath that drops from the Fort Cumberland Road car park: turn left on reaching the shore and the nude area starts within roughly 100 metres, running east towards a concrete sea wall. Naturists ask that nobody strips within about 50 metres of the path. The beach is steep shingle with patches of coarse sand, so a thick mat or a chair makes a big difference, and there is no natural shade. Behind it sits a long-disused Ministry of Defence site; the land above mean high water belongs to QinetiQ, which has never designated it for naturism but has tolerated decades of nude use. Planning permission for housing on the former MOD land was granted in May 2024, with a new seafront path and boulder sea defences, which may make the beach less secluded over time. It is one of the busiest naturist beaches on the English south coast on hot days, attracting mostly men plus some couples, and a local beach liaison group looks after it.

Getting there

By car, follow the A2030 towards Southsea, then Eastney Road and Fort Cumberland Road to the large free gravel car park at the junction with Melville Road (satnav PO4 9LP); it fills quickly on hot days. A short footpath at the bottom corner of the car park leads to the shingle; turn left (east). By public transport, take a train to Portsmouth Harbour or Fratton and a local bus towards Eastney/Ferry Road, then walk along the seafront about 400 m. The walk from the car park takes only a few minutes but the shingle is not suitable for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

Visitors consistently describe Eastney as one of the busiest naturist beaches in southern England on hot days, with a crowd dominated by single men and fewer couples or families. The free car park and short walk are praised, while the shingle is the most common complaint, with people recommending thick mats, chairs and beach shoes. There is no shade and it can be breezy. Swimming is described as pleasant around low tide. Regulars note occasional problem behaviour in the dunes and encourage reporting it, and some worry that the planned housing and new seafront path will change the beach's character.

Legal context

Eastney is not a designated naturist beach: British Naturism notes that landowner QinetiQ has not designated it but naturist use continues, and Portsmouth City Council is aware of the tradition. There is no designation scheme for nude beaches in England and Wales; simple nudity is not an offence, and the Sexual Offences Act 2003 exposure offence requires intent to cause alarm or distress. Visitor reports from July 2026 describe police removing a person over conduct, and regulars report inappropriate behaviour to police.

Naturism at Eastney Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Frequently asked questions

Is Eastney an official nudist beach?

No. It has a long tradition of nude use that the landowner and council tolerate, but it has never been formally designated.

Where is the nude section?

Turn left (east) where the footpath from the Fort Cumberland Road car park reaches the beach; the naturist area starts within about 100 metres. Avoid undressing within 50 metres of the path.

Is there parking?

Yes, a large free gravel car park at Fort Cumberland Road and Melville Road (PO4 9LP), which fills up on hot days.

Are there toilets or cafes?

Not on the beach. The nearby caravan site has facilities but they are mainly for its guests, so bring water and food.

What is the beach surface like?

Steep shingle with some coarse sand, so bring something thick to lie on and footwear for the water.
