About Costa dei Barbari - Sistiana
Costa dei Barbari is a stretch of wild shoreline below the limestone cliffs of the Karst coast just south of Sistiana bay, in Duino-Aurisina municipality, about half an hour's drive north-west of Trieste. The beaches here are narrow strips of pale pebbles and flat rocks at the foot of a wooded slope, facing clear, deep Adriatic water. There is no commercial activity at all: no bars, no sunbed rental, no lifeguards. The coast has been used by nude bathers since the 1960s, and Italian beach guides describe it as a long-standing nudist spot that locals want to keep that way. Nudity is customary rather than authorised; Costa dei Barbari is not on the Italian Naturist Federation's list of official naturist places. Because the only way down is a steep woodland path from the coast road, it is usually much less crowded than the lidos of Sistiana bay, and it attracts a mixed crowd of nude and clothed bathers. Visit Italy notes naturists here like to watch the sunset over the bay. In strong bora wind the sea can turn rough.
Getting there
The beach lies below the SS14 coast road (Strada Costiera) between Sistiana and Trieste. Park in the small lay-bys along the road where space allows; spaces fill early on summer weekends. From the road a very steep, sometimes slippery path drops through the woods to the shore, and the climb back up takes real effort. Wear proper shoes. Not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Legal context
Italy has no national naturism law, and Costa dei Barbari has no municipal authorisation; nudity here rests on decades of custom. Courts have generally treated nudity at beaches traditionally used by naturists as not offensive, but outside authorised areas it can still be fined as an act contrary to public decency; we found no reports of recent enforcement here.
Naturism at Costa dei Barbari - Sistiana sits under Italy's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
