About Calshot Beach
Calshot sits at the mouth of Southampton Water on the north shore of the Solent, at the eastern edge of the New Forest. The main beach by the spit, with its rows of beach huts, café and activity centre, is a busy clothed seaside spot. Naturists have traditionally used a quieter quarter- to half-mile of shore to the south-west, starting near the first dilapidated groyne beyond an ornate mock-Grecian boathouse and a clifftop house, and ending at the full-height fence of a nature reserve. The beach is mostly pebble and shingle with some sand at low tide, steep at the top and very gently shelving below, so at low water you may wade a long way to swim, and at high tide very little beach remains. Trees and scrub from the private estate behind give some shade. Views take in the Isle of Wight and constant Solent sailing and shipping. Regulars reported only a few naturists on a typical day, but the landowner opposes nude use, so this is a marginal and contested spot rather than an established naturist beach.
Getting there
From M27 junction 2 take the A326 south past Marchwood, Hythe and Fawley, then the B3053 to Calshot. There is a pay car park on the right with toilets; free roadside spaces are often found in the short one-way loop beyond it. Go through the gap in the beach huts beside the café and walk south-west along the shingle for up to half a mile. Without a car, take the Hythe ferry from Southampton and cycle; there is no bike parking. Not suitable for wheelchairs.
What visitors say
Long-time users describe the naturist stretch as peaceful and private on weekdays, with a handful of couples and singles at most. Common complaints are the uncomfortable shingle (bring sandals and padding), the narrow beach at high tide, and murkier water than Studland. Several mention the no-nudity signs and advise keeping well away from the café end and covering up if in doubt.

Legal context
Not a designated naturist beach. The landowner considers the foreshore private and has posted 'No Nude Bathing' signs (reported 2010 and 2011), and walkingclub.org.uk reported in July 2020 that naturists are no longer welcome. Entering the fenced nature reserve beyond is prohibited.
Naturism at Calshot Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Researched 24 October 2026. No official source confirms naturist status, so treat it as unverified.
