About Cala Tamariua
Cala Tamariua is a cove about 2-3 km north-east of El Port de la Selva on the Alt Empordà coast of the Costa Brava, on the edge of the Cap de Creus area. It is roughly 100 m long and 20-60 m deep, made up of coarse dark sand, gravel and stones, and sheltered between two hills, with very clear water that is popular for snorkelling. The Costa Brava tourist board lists it as a cove where nudism is allowed, and Spain's national tourism site notes that, depending on the part of the beach, it can be full of nudists. In practice it is mixed: visitors describe a partly nude crowd, with nude bathers spread along the cove rather than in a fenced-off section. Occupancy is usually medium; it is busy in July and August and much quieter in spring and autumn. It is unspoilt, with only bins and cleaning, and can be windy when the north wind blows. The coastal path continues from here to further small coves, including Cala Tavallera.
Getting there
From El Port de la Selva follow the road along the coast north-east towards the Tamariua area; there is a small car park just above the cove, which fills early in summer. From there a short path (about 500 m) leads down. At 2-3 km from the town centre it is also easy to reach on foot. The path is uneven and there is no wheelchair access. Boats can reach the cove from the sea.
What visitors say
Visitors describe Tamariua as a quiet, wild-feeling cove with very clear water and good snorkelling. Reviews mention that nude bathers are a minority, perhaps around a third of people on the beach, mixed with clothed families. The stony surface makes water shoes useful, there are no facilities so you must bring everything, and the small car park fills fast in summer, so arriving early is the usual tip. It can get windy.
