About Cala Saona
Cala Saona is the main beach on Formentera's west coast, in the Sant Francesc Xavier area, facing Ibiza and the islets of Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell. It is a deep bay of fine white and golden sand, about 140 m wide, enclosed by reddish sandstone cliffs on both sides, with turquoise, shallow water that is usually calm. Because it faces west it is one of Formentera's best sunset spots. A large hotel and a couple of restaurants stand above the beach, sunbeds are rented, and lifeguards work in season, so it is a busy, semi-urban family beach in July and August. The Spanish Naturist Federation still lists it among Formentera's beaches of traditional nudist use, reflecting the island's long-standing tolerance of nude bathing, but it does not specify a section. In practice nudity is less common here than at Ses Illetes or Migjorn; naturists tend to settle away from the hotel, towards the rocky edges of the bay, and on quieter days.
Getting there
From Sant Francesc Xavier take the road towards Cap de Barbaria and turn right for Cala Saona. There is a car park at the end of the tarmac road (unsupervised, fewer than 50 spaces), then an easy walk to the sand. Bus line L3 stops in front of Hotel Cala Saona in season. Cycling from Sant Francesc is popular. Access to the sand is easy, though not adapted for wheelchairs.
Amenities
Legal context
Nudity is not an offence on Spanish public beaches, and the Spanish Penal Code has not treated it as public indecency since 1989. A municipality can still restrict it by local ordinance. The Spanish Naturist Federation lists Cala Saona as a beach of traditional nudist use; no area is signposted and the beach is mixed (checked 2026).
Naturism at Cala Saona sits under Spain's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
