About Cala del Volante
Cala del Volante is a tiny cove on the rugged coast south of Peñíscola in Castellón, below the hills of the Serra d'Irta. It is only about 30 m long and 20 m deep. The shore is mostly large boulders and pebbles, with some patches of fine golden sand, and it is backed by low cliffs. The Valencian regional tourism board groups it with Cala Ordí, Cala Badum and Cala Argilaga as the coves of Peñíscola's southern coast. Many of these coves sit against the backdrop of the Serra d'Irta Natural Park. The Spanish Naturist Federation lists Volante as a beach of traditional naturist use, describes it as semi-urban with low occupancy, and says it has no lifeguard or showers. Because it is so small and stony, it suits a few people who come to swim and snorkel off the rocks rather than spend a full beach day. Water conditions are usually moderate. Bring sturdy footwear and something soft to lie on.
Getting there
The cove is south of Peñíscola town, off the coast road that runs towards the Serra d'Irta. FEN says access is not difficult. A beach guide notes signposted access, an unguarded car park with fewer than 50 spaces, and the N-340 as the nearest main road. Expect a short scramble over rocks to the waterline. In summer, access to coves in this area can be controlled. There are no facilities, so bring water and shade.
