About Bugasee

The Bugasee is the bathing lake in the Fuldaaue, the Fulda floodplain on the south-east side of Kassel between the city and Waldau, laid out as part of the former Bundesgartenschau (federal garden show) grounds. The surrounding meadows, sports fields and riverside paths form one of Kassel's main recreation areas, with the Auestadion sports park and a city campsite close by, and part of the floodplain is a bird sanctuary. In season, DLRG Kassel lifeguards cover the lake in good weather on weekday evenings and on weekends and holidays. Nude use is reported only on nacktbaden.de, whose entries describe a large nude sunbathing area in the old garden-show grounds next to the lake, visible from the bridge on the approach road, with free parking nearby and a kiosk; one contributor (around 2000) says nude bathing and sunbathing are officially possible there and that space is hard to find on sunny days. No current city page confirming a designated nude area was found, so the status is best treated as long-standing custom.

Getting there

From the A44 leave at Kassel-Süd, head towards Kassel and take the exit for the Auestadion; turn right at the next lights and follow the priority road round to the right. Just after the bend the road crosses a bridge, from which the nude area is visible on the left; free parking is a little further on the right. The Fuldaaue is also reachable by bike on the R1 Fulda cycle route and by city tram and bus to the Auestadion.

What visitors say

Nude visitors' reports are old but consistent: a large meadow area next to the lake, busy on sunny days so that a good spot can be hard to find, with free parking and a kiosk close by. General visitors describe the Fuldaaue as a pleasant walking and cycling area, though one notes the lack of cafés right at the lake.

Legal context

nacktbaden.de contributors (around 2000) describe nude bathing as officially possible on the meadow by the Bugasee, but no current City of Kassel source designating an FKK area was found. The lake is a supervised bathing water in season; parts of the Fuldaaue are protected bird habitat.
