About Blackgang

The naturist beach usually listed as Blackgang is on the south-facing coast at the southern tip of the Isle of Wight, below the landslip ground between Blackgang and Niton. One guide says its proper name is Rocken End. It is a long, wild beach with crumbling cliffs behind it. You cannot reach it from the Blackgang cliff top. It is an unofficial naturist beach, long used by both locals and visitors, and one regular describes almost five miles of beach. The shore is fine shingle, comfortable to walk and lie on, but it shelves quickly into deep, clear water. Currents can be strong, and the cliffs are unstable and prone to landslips. The former Southview naturist centre nearby was lost to landslips. Surf anglers also use the beach. There are no facilities, so bring everything you need. The steep, partly overgrown descent keeps numbers down, so there is plenty of space even in summer. Recent erosion has closed the old route along the shore from Whale Chine, which leaves the steep path from Niton as the usual way down.

Getting there

From the A3055, take the easternmost turn into Niton (signed St Catherine's Lighthouse), follow the road through the village and turn left into Old Blackgang Road, a narrow no-through road. It ends at the small, free Windy Gap car park, which fills early on fine days. Go through the gate, follow the path to a stile and head downhill, bearing right, following white paint marks on rocks and trees. The path is very steep in places and needs some scrambling. Ropes were reported in 2010 to 2012 but may be gone. The Whale Chine route has been closed by erosion since about 2022. Not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

What visitors say

Regulars and first-time visitors describe a beautiful, spacious beach with plenty of room and few people. The usual complaint is the descent from Niton, which several people call more a scramble than a walk. Visitors suggest taking the left fork in the woods to avoid climbing over rocks, and wearing proper footwear. Surf anglers are often there. The guide that collects these reports asks visitors to report any inappropriate behaviour to the police.

Legal context

Nudity is not illegal in England in itself, and this remote beach has long been used by naturists. It has no official designation. The main legal and practical risks are landslips and path closures: the shore route from Whale Chine was closed for erosion around 2022.

Naturism at Blackgang sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Are there facilities?

None. Bring water, food and shade, and check the tides before you go.
