About Beach Faneroque

Faneroque is a remote black-sand cove on the wild north-west coast of Gran Canaria, south of Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves, below the cliffs of the Tamadaba Natural Park. Locals sometimes call it tractor beach after an old tractor left rusting on the sand. The cove is roughly 260 m long and 65 m wide. Dark volcanic sand is mixed with boulders, and it is backed by steep, unstable slopes. There are no buildings, services or lifeguards, and the nearest hamlet is El Risco. Because it is so hard to reach, it gets few visitors, and guides to Gran Canaria's beaches count it among the island's nudist spots. Most visitors are hikers who come for the isolation, so nude sunbathing is the norm rather than the exception. The Atlantic here is often rough and windy. The beach can only be reached and enjoyed around low tide, as the rising sea cuts off the way back along the shore. Rockfalls are a real risk at the foot of the cliffs.

Getting there

Drive the winding GC-200 coast road from Agaete/Puerto de las Nieves towards El Risco, about 20 minutes. Park at a small roadside lay-by above the coast. A steep, rough path (the Picón trail) drops to the shore over loose rock and slippery stones. It takes about 15-20 minutes going down and around 30 minutes back up. Go only at low tide and leave before it turns. There is no public transport to the trailhead and no wheelchair access.

What visitors say

Hikers describe Faneroque as one of the most spectacular and empty beaches on Gran Canaria, worth the effort for the black sand and cliffs. They warn that the descent is steep and slippery, the climb back is tiring in the heat, and the tide must be checked before setting out, since the rising sea can trap visitors. Nudity is described as common and unremarkable given how few people make it down. Bring water, shade and sturdy shoes, as there is nothing on site.

Legal context

Spanish law does not prohibit nudity on beaches, and Agaete has no known local ban, but Faneroque has no official naturist designation. It lies within the protected Tamadaba Natural Park, so park rules apply (stay on paths, no camping or fires). No enforcement issues were found (2026).

Naturism at Beach Faneroque sits under Spain's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Frequently asked questions

Is Faneroque a nudist beach?

It is not officially designated, but guides list it among Gran Canaria's nudist beaches and most of the few visitors bathe nude.

When can I visit?

Only around low tide. The rising sea cuts off the beach, so check tide tables and leave in good time.

How hard is the walk?

It is a steep, rough path of about 15-20 minutes down and 30 minutes back up over loose and slippery rock. Wear proper shoes.

Is it safe for swimming?

Often not. The sea is exposed, with strong waves and wind, there is no lifeguard, and rockfall is a risk under the cliffs.

Is it suitable for children?

Not really. The access, the tides and the hazards make it unsuitable for young children.
