About Bassenfleth Elbstrand
A sandy natural beach on the south bank of the Elbe at Bassenfleth, between Stade and Hollern-Twielenfleth on the edge of the Altes Land fruit-growing region, reached over the river dyke. The beach is fine sand with low dunes and bushes and was widened by sand replenishment in the early 2000s, giving plenty of room and many sheltered hollows. The informal nude section is at the north-western end: walk left (downstream) along the beach towards the fence of the former Stade nuclear power plant, now being dismantled. It has never been signposted. The river here is a busy shipping lane, and passing container ships send waves onto the beach, which visitors enjoy but which call for care when swimming in the strong tidal current. Evening bonfire parties leave broken glass and cans, and dogs often run loose, so watch where you lie down.
Getting there
From Stade follow the road towards the Altes Land and turn off towards the Kernkraftwerk/Saline, then take the road to Bassenfleth before the plant gate. Park at the car park by the dyke and cross it to the beach, then walk left towards the power-plant fence. Parking is scarce on hot days, and one side of the road is a strict no-parking zone; tickets and towing have been reported, so park legally even if it means walking further. No facilities on the nude section.
What visitors say
Older reports describe a scenic sandy Elbe beach with fun ship waves and plenty of secluded spots for nude sunbathing. Downsides mentioned repeatedly are litter and broken glass from evening parties, loose dogs, a shortage of legal parking with strict ticketing, and some unpleasant behaviour by groups of young men towards women alone. Most reports are from the early 2000s, so conditions may have changed.

Legal context
Nude sunbathing at the downstream end of the Bassenfleth beach has been tolerated for decades but is not designated or signposted. Reports from 2001-2006 note camera surveillance at the edge of the power-plant security area; the plant has since been shut down and is being dismantled.
Naturism at Bassenfleth Elbstrand sits under Germany's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
