About Baiersdorf: Ausee & Angersee

Two flooded gravel pits at the Baiersdorfer Mühle, just south of Baiersdorf and a few kilometres north of Erlangen, lying in the flat Regnitz valley between the river and the Main-Danube Canal. The town of Baiersdorf runs the area as a public recreation ground. The northern lake, the Ausee, is the bathing lake; the southern Angersee belongs to the local angling club and its water surface is excluded from the recreation area, so swimming there is not permitted. The nude area is a marked lawn on the far western shore of the Ausee, reached by walking around the lake from the entrance. Elsewhere a sandy, man-made beach on the southern shore draws families with small children. The ground is mostly open grass with some trees, and the lakes are fairly small, so on hot weekends the whole site gets busy. Water quality is generally good, but the Ausee has had recurring blue-green algae episodes (a bathing ban in 2004 and a city warning in 2020), so check notices before swimming. Dogs, tents, open fires and loud music are banned under the town bylaw.

Getting there

From the A73 (Frankenschnellweg) take the Möhrendorf exit towards Baiersdorf, then turn towards Röttenbach; just before the canal bridge there is a car park on the right under tall trees. Parking is paid (reported at 1 EUR for 2 hours, 2 EUR per day). From there it is a flat walk of roughly 500-700 m on gravel paths to the Ausee, and the nude lawn is at the far western side. Cars are not allowed inside the recreation area. Cycling from Erlangen along the Regnitz takes about 30 minutes. Paths are level but unpaved.

What visitors say

Visitors describe the Ausee as a pleasant, easy-to-reach lake for the Erlangen area, with a relaxed nude lawn that is well used on sunny days and a separate busy family beach. The main complaints concern water quality: blue-green algae warnings have been issued in several summers, and some reports say the lake looked visibly affected. Others note that the car park is a short walk away and that cycling in from Erlangen is the easiest option. Older reports suggested sunbathing nude stays possible even when swimming is discouraged.

Legal context

Baiersdorf's 2021 bylaw for the Anger- und Ausee recreation area requires clothing everywhere in the area except a marked part of plot 1101, which is the designated nude zone; lewd or disturbing behaviour is expressly forbidden. Bathing in the Ausee is at your own risk, the Angersee water surface is outside the recreation area, and dogs are banned from 15 April to 15 October.

Naturism at Baiersdorf: Ausee & Angersee sits under Germany's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.

Frequently asked questions

Is nude bathing allowed at the Ausee in Baiersdorf?

Yes, in one marked zone. The town bylaw requires clothing everywhere else in the recreation area, so stay within the signed nude lawn on the western shore.

Can I swim in the Angersee?

No. The Angersee belongs to the angling club and its water is excluded from the recreation area; swimming is only at the Ausee, at your own risk.

Where do I park?

At the paid car park by the canal bridge on the road towards Röttenbach, then walk a few hundred metres to the lake. Cars may not enter the recreation area.

Can I bring my dog?

Not between 15 April and 15 October, except on the two edge paths marked on the town plan; dogs must be leashed at all times.

Is the water safe?

Usually good, but blue-green algae has led to warnings in past summers. Check the town's notices before swimming.
